Where are all the Philly Street Style Bloggers?

Several of the people I've taken pictures of for this blog have told me that they've been photographed by street style bloggers before. Which begs the question: who are these bloggers? And why can't I find them? Why are there so few sites that come up through googling "Philadelphia street style" or some derivation thereof? The blog with the URL phillystreetstyle.com is not street style at all. Streetchicphilly.com, titled "Philly Street Style," hasn't been updated since March. Broad & Market has been hacked and has nothing up but a disclaimer. Other sites that do Philly street style are associated with print publications, including Philadelphia Weekly, Essence, and Philadelphia Magazine. Straight up street style bloggers seem few and far between in the City of Brotherly Love. The closest I've found to a straight up (and still active) street style blogger is Big Rube of Street Gazing. It's good stuff. But even he is associated with a print publication, Philadelphia Daily News. If you know of any active Philly street style bloggers, please let me know.

  1. Hi! I actually found your blog by Googling "Philly street style blog" or something like that. I'm a transplant from Central PA who somehow landed in West Chester, and I'm moving to West Philly this fall. I was toying with the idea of starting a Philly street style blog to give myself another creative project and get to know my new environment a little better. I've really enjoyed scrolling through your posts thus far! Any tips for someone who's thinking of starting something like this? I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

  2. Hi Lisli,

Nice to hear from you. And welcome (in advance) to Philly. I don't know that I have any sage advice to offer. It's one of those things you learn by doing. And, as you suggested, it is a great way to get to know a town. You'll probably find the easiest places to shoot are Walnut St and Rittenhouse Square, but there are lots of other interesting spots for style shooting: Northern Liberties/Fishtown, (especially on the weekends), Old City on 2nd and 3rd (especially on First Friday), South St, the Italian Market, Passyunk, Baltimore Ave. My strategy from the start has been total immersion. Just get yourself out there and do it until it starts to turn into something worthwhile. And take lots of pictures of everyone. The worst is getting home and realizing none of your shots are usable. Feel free to contact me if you want more advice. And send me a link if/when you get the blog up.

  3. Thanks Brent! I finally have something set up. The site design might change — I'm already thinking of switching to Wordpress — but my first post is up at www.streetstories.us.
